Candidiasis is an infection caused by fungi that are part of the normal flora of the vagina. The most common strain is known as Candida Albicans. This type of fungus is found naturally in healthy women, but when there are changes in the vaginal pH, it causes excessive growth of Candida, which is what produces the symptoms of infection. The causes of the alteration of the vaginal pH can be very varied:

  • Use of antibiotics
  • Hormonal treatments
  • Steroid use
  • Stress
  • Excess humidity
Or the physiological hormonal changes themselves, such as pregnancy or perimenopause.

In other cases, candidiasis is associated with diseases such as diabetes, HIV, viruses, neoplasia or nutrient deficiencies.

Some of the symptoms of vaginal candidiasis are:

  • An increased white-clumpy discharge
  • Itching
  • Dysuria (difficulty or pain when urinating)
  • Dyspareunia (pain or discomfort before, during or after intercourse)
  • Swollen genitals

Vaginal candidiasis can sometimes become chronic, leading to what is known as recurrent candidiasis. When this occurs, a monthly prophylactic treatment based on oral and/or vaginal antifungals or probiotics is usually chosen. There is no scientific evidence that alternative treatments such as diets, enemas, ozone therapy, etc. can prevent chronicity.
Finally, it should be noted that candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease, so the partner is only treated if he or she is symptomatic.
